Support for Siblings

Having your baby on a neonatal unit is difficult for the whole family, particularly siblings, who may struggle to understand and process what is happening.

Preparing siblings for the Neonatal Unit

Siblings often need a lot of preparation, information, reassurance and support when a new baby arrives and even more when the baby is admitted to the Neonatal Unit.

If your hospital allows sibling to visit, you may wish to consider:

  • Describing where the baby will be in the Neonatal Unit, telling them about the sounds, wires, monitors, staff and other babies they might see.

  • Telling them about the size of the baby, you can illustrate this with a teddy/doll of a similar size.

  • Showing them a photograph or drawing a picture of the baby including things they may see attached to the baby.

  • Reading books together that are related to siblings and the Neonatal Unit.

  • Giving them ideas of things they can do during the visit to bond with the baby, such as, talking, reading, singing and holding or touching baby. You can talk to your Neonatal Nurses to get support with this.

After each visit it is a good idea to talk to your child about how they are feeling and address any questions they have. If you are struggling with this you can speak with the nursing and medical team, who may be able to support you with this. Reading with your child

Reading is good way to help siblings to understand the new events surrounding their lives. Age appropriate books are an easy way to start conversations and navigate the intense emotions they may be feeling.
