Neonatal Nursing
A career in neonatal nursing in the East Midlands provides the opportunity to work in diverse settings, delivering different levels of care to babies and their families.
Neonatal nurses work closely with parents and families to care for premature or unwell newborns. As a neonatal nurse you may care for babies needing intensive care, high dependency, or special care depending on the levels of care provided on the unit. This varied role is not only exciting and rewarding but also offers numerous career opportunities as your experience grows.
Whether you are a Registered (Adult or Child Branch) nurse or midwife, overseas trained, a nurse returning to practice, and/or have little or extensive neonatal experience, there is a role for you.
When you join a neonatal unit, you will be supported with a local induction and/or preceptorship programme tailored to your needs. For those new to neonatal care, the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network also offers a Foundation in Neonatal Care programme to build your skills and confidence. This course equips you with essential baseline knowledge in evidence based neonatal care.
Your career can progress further with the Qualified in Specialty (QIS) Course, offered by universities across the East Midlands. As a neonatal nurse, you can work across areas like intensive care, high dependency, special care, transitional care, homecare, and transport, or focus on a specific area of expertise.
We offer a clear career pathway with extensive development opportunities, including advanced clinical practice, education and training, leadership and management, neonatal transport, homecare (community), and research.
To become a Neonatal Nurse, you must be a Registered (Adult or Child Branch) Nurse or Midwife working on a neonatal unit and you must have completed Qualified in Speciality training.
Alternatively, you can start your journey in neonatal care in a non-registered role, such as Nursing Associate, clinical support worker, or nursery nurse. You could then be supported in obtaining a registered nurse qualification, before going on to complete Qualified in Specialty training.
