If you are a parent or carer using the virtual tour to explore the neonatal unit where your baby was cared for, please ensure you are in a safe space and feel emotionally supported. Some parents have shared that revisiting the unit, even after some time, can trigger strong emotions, so please take care of yourself.
Who's who on the Neonatal Unit
Matron Sarah Jenkins Unit Manager Sarah Bray Feeding Coordinators/Breastfeeding Support Staff on the unit are trained to support families with breast and all other types of feeding. Specialist feeding advisors are available via unit referral Bereavement Support Bereavement support via unit referral Counselling Service/Psychological Support A neonatal psychologist works on the unit and can be accessed by all parents, in addition there is a counsellor who can also support families Play Specialists Available on request from the Paediatric ward.
What to expect on arrival
Access to the unit Entry is via a locked door, please ring buzzer to gain access Who to ask for on arrival The nurse caring for your baby Who will give initial update on baby's condition The nurse caring for your baby can give updates at any time Medical staff are available during the ward rounds and upon request Ward Round times 11:00am weekdays, times vary on weekends
Quiet time Daily between 1:00pm and 3:00pm
Accommodation for parents 3 double ensuite bedrooms are available on the unit Accommodation for siblings Not available Meal Provision Parents are entitles to a £10.00 meal voucher each day, which can be used in the hospital restaurant, please note the restaurant closes at 3:00pm
Self Catering Facilities Hot water boiler, microwave, fridge, crockery and cutlery available. Tea, coffee, milk, sugar, bread and cereal are also provided free of charge Mobile Phones It is important that mobile phones are switched to silent and that telephone calls are made away from the cot side, in the public areas of the hospital as this helps to reduce noise levels which babies can find stressful. Mobile phones can be used to take photographs of your baby Breast Feeding Facilities/Equipment There is an expressing room on the unit
Mobile breast pumps are available for use at the cot side
A number of breast pumps are also available to loan for use at home whilst baby is on the unit Sitting Area There is a sitting room with TV and a quiet room on the unit Play Area/facilities There is a play area available. Children should be supervised at all times Parent Support Group A parent support group called ‘Cuppa and Chat’ runs monthly in the community.
Each Wednesday, Clare Harris from the Emily Harris Foundation holds a group in the parents sitting area 10:00am until 11:30am
This neonatal unit has its own Facebook support group run by parents, you can join here or search Facebook for Mini Miracles Parents Group. Please note this group is only open to parents of preterm/term babies who are or have been on the neonatal unit at King's Mill Hospital

Access to a Midwife A midwife service is available for postnatal ladies from the ward and those who have been discharged home If you need to access this service, please speak to the nurse in charge on the unit
