Access to a Midwife
A midwife service is available for postnatal ladies from the ward and those who have been discharged home

If you need to access this service, please speak to the nurse in charge on the unit

Feeding Coordinators/Breastfeeding Support
All staff on the unit are trained to support families with breast and all other types of feeding.
Specialist feeding advisors are available via unit referral

Provided by the bereavement midwife via unit referral

Counselling Service/Psychological Support
There is no support available on the unit. Support should be accessed through own GP

Play Specialists
Available on request from the paediatric ward. What to expect on arrival Access to the unit
Entry is via a locked door, please use security phone on main corridor to gain access

Who will give initial update on baby's condition
The nurse caring for your baby can give updates at any time.
Medical staff are available during the ward rounds and upon request

Quiet time
There is no dedicated quiet time. The unit promotes a quiet and peaceful environment at all times

Accommodation for parents
2 bedrooms are available and located just off the unit

Accommodation for siblings
Not available

Meal Provision
One resident parent can be provided with a voucher to help toward the cost of a meal in the Café Retreat restaurant within the hospital

Self Catering Facilities
Microwave, fridge freezer, crockery, and cutlery available. Tea, coffee, milk, sugar and a variety of snacks are also provided free of charge

Mobile Phones
It is important that mobile phones are switched to silent and that telephone calls are made away from the cot side, in the public areas of the hospital as this helps to reduce noise levels which babies can find stressful. Mobile phones can be used to take photographs of your baby

Breast Feeding Facilities/Equipment
There is a breastfeeding room on the unit
Mobile breast pumps are available for use at the cot side
A number of breast pumps are also available to loan for use at home whilst baby is on the unit

Sitting Area
There is a sitting room with TV for parents on the unit

Play Area/facilities
There are toys available in the sitting room and a couple of activity tables in the nurseries.
Children should be supervised at all times

Parent Support Group
Our parent support group is called Queens Early Starters, and is held on the first Tuesday of every month. For further information, dates and topics please refer to the information leaflet in the parent information folder. The unit also has its own Facebook support group, you can join here or search facebook for Queens Early Starters. Please note this group is only open to parents of preterm/term babies who are or have been on the neonatal unit Queens Early Starters Facebook Group
